Why We Exist

Roy's Family Cafe exists to be a genuinely welcoming space for families in Kyoto. Our mission is simple: to create a cafe that families choose again and again — not because there's no alternative, but because nothing else quite compares. We believe that food has the power to create belonging, that a good table can hold a whole family together, and that the right cup of tea can make even a difficult day more manageable.

We make this possible through thoughtful food preparation, a family-designed space, trained and caring staff, and a commitment to the local community that surrounds us. We are proud to source our produce from small local farms, partner with nearby artisan bakers and tofu makers, and employ members of the Nakagyo-ku community who bring genuine warmth to every interaction.

This website is part of that mission — it exists to help families in Kyoto and visitors to the city discover a space where they are truly welcome, find recipes that bring the Roy's spirit into their own kitchens, and stay connected with the events and seasonal offerings that make every visit to Roy's a little different.

"We don't just serve food. We create the conditions for families to be fully present with each other — and that is a privilege we don't take lightly."

Our Mission, Every Day

This photograph captures something we see almost every day — a parent and child sharing a quiet moment with a book while the cafe hums softly around them. To us, this is the mission made visible. The child is safe, absorbed, and content. The parent is present, unhurried, and fully there. The cafe has done its job.

We work hard every day to maintain the conditions that make these moments possible — the right lighting, the right ambient volume, the right pace of service, and the right attitude in every member of our team. It's a lot of small things adding up to something that feels effortless from the outside.

How We've Grown

2018

Opening Day

Roy's Family Cafe opened on March 15, 2018, to a small gathering of local families and friends. The space seated 24 guests and offered a concise morning menu. By the end of the first week, every table had been reserved in advance.

2019

The Kids Corner Opens

Following consistent feedback from families, we converted the back section of the cafe into a dedicated Kids Corner — complete with toy area, art table, and low seating for small children. It immediately became the most photographed feature of the cafe.

2020

Seasonal Menu Programme Launched

Inspired by the seasons of Kyoto, we formalised our rotating seasonal drinks and desserts programme. Each season now brings a completely new set of offerings alongside our year-round favorites.

2021

Family Events and Workshops Begin

The first Family Cooking Workshop was held on a rainy Saturday in November. All 6 family places were filled within 30 minutes of the announcement. We've held it every Saturday since.

2023

Outdoor Terrace Opens

After careful planning and renovation, our outdoor terrace opened in April, adding 16 additional seats and a new space for garden picnic events throughout the warmer months.

2026

Today

Roy's Family Cafe serves over 400 guests per week, employs a team of eight full-time and five part-time staff, and remains deeply rooted in the Nakagyo-ku community that welcomed us from the start.
